The Rather Small Turnip

The Rather Small Turnip! – By Laurence Anholt

This book is about a man who is desperately hungry who wanted to quickly demolish something into his hungry tummy. So he asked his wife for something to eat but there was nothing to eat at all.

Suddenly he found a small turnip, but sadly he did not like turnips and his wife did not either. They both decided to ask

the dog, cat, goat and cow if they liked turnips. They all said NO! Then a small mouse ran passed them and could smell the juicy turnip. He ate it until there was not a scrap of turnip on the grass. Every one else was still hungry, so the cat ate the mouse the dog ate the cat, the goat ate the dog, the cow ate the goat, and the farmers wife ATE THE COW! The poor farmer was  still hungry and his wife walked off happily by her self!! Written by Emmeline - Year 5

Born To Run by Michael Morpurgo

Born To Run by Michael Morpurgo
Patrick finds a bag of puppies in a river on the way to school. A lollipop man helps him take them to school where Patrick becomes a hero. He asks his mum and dad if he can keep the puppies but his parents only let him keep one. Patrick calls the puppy Best-Mate, he is a greyhound. When Patrick takes him to the park he gets taken by the lollipop man who sells the dog to Becky’s step-dad because he races greyhounds.

Becky becomes very fond of Best-Mate. She doesn’t know his name so she calls him Bright-Eyes. Bright-Eyes makes a friend called Alfie. One-day Alfie breaks his leg and is not able to race anymore. He gets taken away, simultaneously Becky goes out for a walk with Bright-Eyes. She walks through the fields and sees Alfie being killed. She was so upset by it that she runs away with Bright-Eyes. However she gets badly hurt and is taken to hospital. Bright-Eyes isn't allowed in, he has to wait outside. An old man takes him home and calls him Paddywack.

Some years later Paddywack sees Patrick again but Patrick doesn’t recognise him.

I thought this book was very interesting and I like the way Michael Morpurgo wrote it. It was exciting, I also liked it because it had lots of different adventures and a variety of characters. I would give the book 10 out of 10. I think this book is aimed at children that are 9, 10, 11 and 12 years old. Written by Jamie - Year 5

Divided We Fall by Alan Gibbons

Divided We Fall by Alan Gibbons
I really liked Divided We Fall because it was all full of football, which is my favourite sport! The book is about a 11yr old boy called Kev McGovern, who thinks his best friend, Jamie Moore, is the ‘King of Normality’ but soon he finds out that Jamie has been having a nightmare with his parents. Near the end of the book Jamie’s problem with his Mum and Dad gets sorted out so he can play for the football team, ‘The Rough Diamonds’, in their semi-final match, which they win. My best part of the book was when they win their important semi-final match. It was a truly great book and it was so good I’ve started the next book in the series ‘Injury Time’.

Scrapman and Scrapcat

Scrapman and Scrapcat by Carolyn Bear

I really enjoy this book because it has a good theme to it. My favourite bit was when scrapman made scrapcat out of different materials. I think that the Illustrator and Author are really clever to do this book. The pictures really helped me understand it better than I would have with out them.

Crispin and the 3 Little Pigs

Crispin and the 3 Little Pigs by Ted Dewan
It is a great story about little brothers or sisters. Crispin didn't want any brothers or sisters because he has lots of things to play with, and two best friends. At first he thought the 3 little piglets were so noisy. After that when his friends came round they all had lots of fun, and in the end Crispin read a story to the 3 little piglets.
